Acute buspirone abolishes the expression of behavioral dopaminergic supersensitivity in mice BJMBR
Queiroz,C.M.T.; Alcântara,F.B.; Yagüe,A.M.L.; Bibancos,T.; Frussa-Filho,R..
Previous studies have shown that rats withdrawn from long-term treatment with dopamine receptor blockers exhibit dopaminergic supersensitivity, which can be behaviorally evaluated by enhanced general activity observed in an open-field. Recently, it has been reported that co-treatment with the non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic buspirone attenuates the development of haloperidol-induced dopaminergic supersensitivity measured by open-field behavior of rats. The aims of the present study were: 1) to determine, as previously reported for rats, if mice withdrawn from long-term neuroleptic treatment would also develop dopaminergic supersensitivity using open-field behavior as an experimental paradigm, and 2) to examine if acute buspirone administration would...

Advertisement and courtship calls of Dendropsophus nanus (Boulenger, 1889) (Anura: Hylidae) from its type locality (Resistencia, Argentina) Biota Neotropica
Teixeira,Bernardo Franco da Veiga; Zaracho,Víctor Hugo; Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio.
Abstract Dendropsophus nanus was described from Resistencia, Argentina. The species distribution is widespread in South America east of the Andes. Despite its wide distribution, little information about its advertisement call is available in the literature. Call descriptions from type localities are especially important for the resolution of taxonomic issues, as well as for intraspecific comparisons. Herein we describe the advertisement and the male courtship calls of D. nanus from its type locality. The advertisement call of D. nanus is composed of two types of pulsed notes, herein referred to as “note A” (long note) and “note B” (short note), both with similar dominant frequencies, but different durations. The courtship call is formed by notes that are...

After restraint stress, mice with high and low immobility time have a different neurochemical and behavioral profile MV&Z
Reis-Silva, Thiago; Lima, Ana Paula; Moreira, Natalia; Calefi, Atilio; Sandini, Thaísa Meira; Florio, Jorge Camilo; Bernardi, Maria Martha.
High and low immobility on the tail suspension test is a common tool for assessing antidepressant drug effects. However, those parameters might be a natural phenotype present in the mice population and could be selected through behavior evaluation without an induced-drug behavior need. High immobility has been also related to depressed-like behavior, that in humans are characterized by wide range of symptoms, such as anhedonia, anxiety and tiredness.

Aggressive behavior in the genus Gallus sp Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Queiroz,SA; Cromberg,VU.
The intensification of the production system in the poultry industry and the vertical integration of the poultry agribusiness have brought profound changes in the physical and social environment of domestic fowls in comparison to their ancestors and have modified the expression of aggression and submission. The present review has covered the studies focusing on the different aspects linked to aggressiveness in the genus Gallus. The evaluated studies have shown that aggressiveness and subordination are complex behavioral expressions that involve genetic differences between breeds, strains and individuals, and differences in the cerebral development during growth, in the hormonal metabolism, in the rearing conditions of individuals, including feed...

An unusual reproductive mode in Hypsiboas (Anura: Hylidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Moura,Mário Ribeiro de; Motta,Ana Paula; Feio,Renato Neves.
We report an unusual reproductive behavior of Hypsiboas pardalis (Spix, 1824). Species belonging to this genus usually are known to reproduce in lentic water bodies, with the development of exotrophic tadpoles. Herein, the bromeligenous behavior is reported for the first time in Hypsiboas Wagler, 1830. Although this reproductive behavior has been observed more than once here, we believe that it is not typical of Hypsiboas, being better characterized as an unusual reproductive mode for Hypsiboas, indicating the presence of plasticity in the reproductive modes of H. pardalis

Application of basic concepts in ethology in the feline veterinary medicine MV&Z
Genaro, Gelson.
The study of Ethology has grown in the Veterinary Medicine, and nowadays it can be observed a considerable increase in the number of domestic cats in our society. These points highlight the importance of studying this animal from an ethologic point of view. The professional should alert the owner about the behavioural aspects and thoroughly discuss what to expect from a companion animal, minimizing the possibilities of conflicts among them, which can lead to abandonment. The knowledge of the behavioural characteristics, as well as the development of the animal will help for the prevention of future problems.

Architectural changes in larval leaf shelters of Noctuana haematospila (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) between host plant species with different leaf thicknesses Rev. Bras. Zool.
Greeney,Harold F.; Walla,Thomas R.; Lynch,Ryan L..
Insect-food-plant associations have been shown to be influenced by the chemical, physical and nutritional characteristics of plants. We suggest that among insect larvae that use leaf material to build shelters, food-plant use may be constrained by differences in host leaf structure, illuminating a rarely investigated aspect of insect-plant interactions. To explore the potential effects of leaf structure on shelter building behavior in a Neotropical skipper butterfly, we investigated shelter building patterns on two congeneric food-plants that varied in leaf thickness. Shelter architecture varied significantly between hosts, with thicker leaves requiring longer cuts to construct shelters. The relationship between shelter building behavior and leaf structure...

Assessing land use by cattle in heterogeneous environments Ciência Rural
Sant'Anna,Aline Cristina; Costa,Mateus José Rodrigues Paranhos da; Páscoa,Adriano Gomes; Silva,Lívia Carolina Magalhães; Jung,Jens.
The aim of this note is to describe preliminary results on assessment of land use by cattle, obtained in a pilot study using Geographic Information System (GIS). The research was carried out on a semi-natural pasture in Sweden, where the geographic positions of one cow were recorded during 25 consecutive days during summer. The cow, wearing a GPS collar, was integrated in a herd of 53 Hereford cattle. Each location point registered for the animal was considered as a sampling unit (N=3,097). The spatial distribution of ground declivity, water sources, cattle tracks, and classes of woody vegetation cover (forest, grassland with trees and open grassland) were recorded. The storage, processing and data analysis were carried out using the Idrisi and GS+...

Assessment of sexual risk behaviors and perception of vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in women, 1999-2012: a population based survey in a medium-sized Brazilian city BJID
Mesenburg,Marilia Arndt; Muniz,Ludmila Correa; Silveira,Mariângela Freitas.
Sexual behavior is a key factor for susceptibility to sexually transmitted diseases. An evaluation of the sexual behavior of women at reproductive age was conducted in 1999. A replication of this study aims to evaluate the current situation and identify changes in sexual behavior, 13 years later. This is a population-based cross-sectional study, conducted with 1071 women in Pelotas, Brazil. Compared to the 1999 study, a 14% increase in early sexual debut and an 8% decrease in the non-use of condoms were observed in 2012. The proportion of women who reported anal sex doubled between these periods. There was no trend of increase or decrease in the prevalence of behaviors with distinct patterns being observed for each of them. Reduction of non-use of condoms...

Association dynamics of tuna and purse seine bycatch species with drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Tolotti, Mariana Travassos; Forget, Fabien; Capello, Manuela; Filmalter, John David; Hutchinson, Melanie; Itano, David; Holland, Kim; Dagorn, Laurent.
Several pelagic fish species are known to regularly associate with floating objects in the open ocean, including commercially valuable species. The tuna purse seine industry takes advantage of this associative behavior and has been increasingly deploying free-drifting man-made floating objects, also known as fish aggregating devices (FADs). Using passive acoustic telemetry, this study describes the associative dynamics of the main targeted tropical tuna species (Thunnus albacares, T. obesus and Katsuwonus pelamis), as well as three major bycatch species, silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) and oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata). Short-term excursions away from the FADs were frequently performed by all tuna...

Atrazine and nicosulfuron affect the reproductive fitness of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
REIS,TATIANE C.; SOARES,MARCUS A.; SANTOS,JOSÉ B. DOS; SANTOS,CONCEIÇÃO A. DOS; SERRÃO,JOSE EDUARDO; ZANUNCIO,JOSÉ C.; FERREIRA,EVANDER A..
Abstract Herbicides can impact non-target metabolic pathways in natural enemies and lead to the reduction of these populations in the field. Behavioral characteristics, morphology and histology of reproductive structures and reproduction of females of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were evaluated under the effect of the herbicides atrazine, nicosulfuron and the mixture of both. The number of mature oocytes per ovary was lower in females exposed to the herbicides atrazine, nicosulfuron and the mixture of both. Herbicides did not affect the longevity and mortality of P. nigrispinus, therefore, they are selective for this predator. On the other hand, herbicides can cause sublethal effects by affecting the reproduction of predators.

Avoidance threshold to oil water soluble fraction by a juvenile marine teleost fish ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Queau, Pierre; Marras, Stefano; Le Floch, Stephane; Farrell, Anthony P.; Nicolas-kopec, Annabelle; Lemaire, Philippe; Domenici, Paolo.
When oil spills occur, behavior is the first line of defense for a fish to avoid being contaminated. Here, we determined the avoidance threshold of the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of oil using a dual flow choice box. Our experiment revealed that a plume of 20%-diluted WSF (total PAH concentration: 8.54 μg L-1) triggered a significant avoidance response that was detected within 7.5 minutes of introducing WSF-contaminated water in the experimental set-up. However, the ecological relevance of seabass capacity to detect and avoid WSF remains to be established. In the short term, such response is indeed liable to reduce sea bass contact time with oil-contaminated water and thus preserve their functional integrity....

Behavior at a nest of Amazilia lactea (Aves, Trochilidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oniki,Yoshika; Antunes,Alexsander Z.; Willis,Edwin O..
The hummingbird Amazilia lactea (Lesson, 1832) built a nest in São Paulo, Brazil, in the spring (Oct) and added lichens during incubation. The female incubated over 70 per cent of the day, 1-56 min per visit, and brooded two small young somewhat less; brooding stopped by about 10 days of age, as did night brooding. Lack of night brooding for large young hummingbirds may reflect lack of space in a small nest. Young stayed in the nest 19 days. Feedings were widely spaced, and presence of possible predators caused alarm.

Behavior of an albino vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus (E. Geoffroy) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae), in captivity Zoologia
Uieda,Wilson.
Albinism in the common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus (E. Geoffrey, 1810) was already reported for seven individuals, six of them did in Brazil. Although this species is relatively easy to keep in captivity and many studies with normally pigmented bats were did under laboratory conditions, no reports on detailed observations of captive albino vampire bats were found in literature. This paper reports some behavioral observation of a single albino female D. rotundus kept in captivity in Brazil between 1991 and 1993. Information on feeding behavior, interactions with normally colored individuals and reproduction were recorded.

Behavior of broiler chickens in four different substrates: a choice test Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Villagrá,A; Olivas,I; Althaus,RL; Gómez,EA; Lainez,M; Torres,AG.
The aim of this study was to determine the selection of bedding material by broiler chickens during the rearing period and whether the choice was determinant to their performing a specific behavior. To achieve this objective, a choice test was designed. A choice pen was constructed where birds could move freely around the four selected materials (straw, wood shavings, rice hulls and sand). Chickens were introduced in this pen in four groups of eight birds, three days a week for one hour per day and group, for four weeks. The location and the activity performed by each broiler were recorded every five minutes. Results showed a preference for sand compared with the other three substrates. However, differences between the behaviors performed in each bedding...
